A dental crown maybe the perfect marriage of form and function, serving both an aesthetic and practical function in tooth restoration. Dr. Derrick L. Williamson, DDS has been serving the prosthodontic, aesthetic and reconstructive needs of the community and employs
Lisle dental crowns for a variety of uses. Even with all the advances in dentistry and dental techniques in recent years crowns remain one of the most popular forms of tooth restoration.
A crown and a cap are actually the same thing with either term connoting a replacement for a tooth that is often placed over the original tooth or a structural foundation that has replaced a missing tooth’s roots. Lisle dental crowns are usually made of porcelain that has been baked onto a metal substrate, or are all porcelain or made from a group of newer ceramic materials. The crown is made in a lab from impressions taken by our doctor. There are several different treatments that our dental office uses crowns for. Crowns are used to restore the function and appearance of a tooth when decay or injury has taken a large portion of it. Crowns also are used to cover the remaining portion of a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment to restore its function and to help prevent re-infection. In all these cases the crown rests on the remnants of the original tooth. Whenever a crown is used over an existing tooth some of the tooth’s own material is removed to make room for the crown.
Lisle dental crowns are also used to replace missing teeth. Dental implants, which is a major method of tooth replacement uses a crown to top the implanted anchor and stem. The crown makes the implant into a fully functional tooth as well as makes it aesthetically match the other teeth around it. Our doctor also uses crowns to hold up bridges that replace missing teeth; the teeth adjacent to those that are missing have crowns put on them to support the bridge. In some treatments crowns have a purely aesthetic purpose. Crowns can be used to even teeth and brighten and whiten them. A row of crowns will give the wearer a white smile of perfect teeth. Our practice can help enhance the function of restored teeth as well as their appearance by using crowns so call us for a consultation with Dr. Williamson.
