Do you suffer from frequent pain in the area of your jaw? If so, our
Naperville TMJ dentist, Dr. Derrick L. Williamson, is here to provide you with the expert advice and relief you need. TMJ is a term used to refer to a group of related disorders involving the temporomandibular joint and muscles that lead to pain and dysfunction in that area. Patients have a range of symptoms and pain levels, and most of the time TMJ does not mean that you have a particularly serious problem with your jaw. There is still much research to be done on the topic, and experts are not completely sure about what causes TMJ most of the time. However, our
Naperville TMJ dentist has different treatments and suggestions for pain relief that have proven to be very helpful for many of the patients that visit Dr. Williamson for help with their TMJ disorder.
Jaw Pain Naperville
There are a few symptoms that can indicate that you are having dysfunction with your TMJ. The first, most prominent symptom is pain in the area. Other symptoms include stiffness of the jaw muscle, radiating pain throughout your jaw and face, locking of the jaw, limited movement in the jaw, a painful clicking or popping of the jaw, and other similar symptoms. If you have experienced any of these symptoms, you should seek the advice of Dr. Williamson as soon as possible so that we can relieve you of this discomfort. There are many treatments you can try right in the comfort of your own home, including applying an ice pack to the area, eating only soft foods while in pain, jaw stretches and exercises, and stress relief. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen are also a good temporary fix for TMJ pain. If the problem persists, we have more advanced treatments that may be effective. Our
Naperville TMJ dentist might recommend that you use an oral appliance called a stabilization splint or mouth guard at night to correct the position of your jaw. There are other treatments that are irreversible that should only be considered in the most extreme situations.
