A cavity is a hole in your tooth that occurs when a tooth decays. Tooth decay is caused by a buildup of plaque. When plaque, a substance that is mostly made up of bacteria and germs, remains on your tooth, the bacteria in your mouth create acids that eat away the tooth enamel. If left untreated, the acids will continue to progressively eat away the tooth enamel which causes the inside part of your tooth to decay and will eventually reach the inside of your tooth where the nerve endings are located. Once this occurs, it is very painful. A cavity can grow bigger and deeper over time and can lead to worse dental problems. Therefore, it’s important to get it repaired as soon as possible to prevent it from progressing to that point. Some common symptoms of a cavity are: a tooth pain, tooth sensitivity; especially when eating or drinking something hot, cold or sweet, pain when you bite down, visible holes in the tooth and staining on the tooth.
